Country living at the historic Baer farm
The Baer family (spelled Bear by 1885) purchased 300 acres in East Hempfield Township from the Penn family in 1718. In 1916, Benjamin and Anna Bear sold an 87 acre farm to John and Lettie Hostetter, ancestors of the current owners. The original 300 acre plot was nearly half the land that today is bounded by Rohrerstown Road and Centerville Road to the east and west, and Marietta Avenue and Columbia Avenue to the north and south. Date stones exist today on the farm--1773, 1805 and 1885. The 17.2 acres on which the apartments stand were also part of the 300 acres.
The 87 acres are still farmed today with corn, soy beans and wheat being the main crops. Thirty-five steers thrive on those crops. It is not uncommon for whitetail deer to be seen enjoying crops in the early morning or evening in this peaceful country setting so close to Lancaster, yet so far removed from the city.
First floor apartments are all handicap adaptable or accessible.
The advantages over a town house include no taxes; homeowners association fees; mortgage; and water, trash, or sewer bills.
